From Scruff Muffin to Superstar: Meet Pixie

A Rough Start, A Remarkable Recovery

When you meet Pixie – or Pixel, poodle bum, gremlin, depending on who’s calling – it’s hard to believe the journey this little dog has been on. With her scruffy coat, cheeky grin, and a mischievous twinkle in her eye, Pixie oozes character. She’s a one-of-a-kind, a Cypriot rescue with a cocktail of breeds (shepadoodle meets chihuahua!) and a survivor’s heart.

As you might imagine, Pixie’s early days were anything but easy. Tied up and dumped, she was left to fend for herself. Fortunately, she was rescued and placed in foster care, where it quickly became clear just how much help she needed. Her back leg was in a sorry state – barely any fur, a deformed foot, and a future hanging in the balance. She was even booked in for amputation.

However, on the day of surgery, the vet team were amazed to see how much strength she had gained. Against all odds, her leg was spared.

Her human mum, Helena, remembers it vividly.
"It was touch and go for a while, but she just kept improving. By the time her surgery date arrived, the vets decided she was strong enough to keep the leg – and we were over the moon," she said. "She’s always had this fighting spirit about her."

A Limp That Wins Hearts

Today, Pixie walks with a slight limp – or, as she prefers to call it, her treat magnet. She’s mastered the art of winning hearts (and snacks) with a well-timed hobble when anyone approaches. It’s her signature move, and it works like a charm.

Even though she won’t be racing in any canicross events, Pixie makes up for it with a zest for life. She ambles freely, usually bringing up the rear of the pack, snuffling, sniffing, or discovering something suitably stinky to roll in. Every photograph from her dog photography portrait session shows that big personality – a little dog with a big story.

"She’s a proper scruff muffin," laughs Helena. "She’s happiest when she’s muddy, rolling in something disgusting, or trailing miles behind everyone else with a big grin on her face."

Capturing Character Through the Lens

As the photographer, I immediately noticed how willing she was to get stuck in with her playmates Dotty and Doug. Despite her deformed front leg, which held her back from full-pelt sprints, she didn’t let it stop her. In fact, she tried her best to keep pace and didn’t hesitate to step in when the others got a bit too rowdy.

The texture of her fur was a joy to photograph – a bit rough and ready, yet with undertones of possible elegance, much like Pixie herself. And then there were her eyes. There was a definite glint – something I was fortunate to catch on camera – that gave her a unique, almost knowing quality. Her personality didn’t just shine through her actions; it extended right through those eyes.

That’s the magic of dog photography portraits – capturing those little details that tell the bigger story.
