D.J. the Hamiltonstovare: A Canicross Companion and Star of Discover Dogs Crufts 2025
At Pets Make Portraits, I love capturing the spirit of sport, and few subjects embody that spirit better than D.J., a Hamiltonstovare with a passion for Canicross. His journey from a quiet puppy to a dynamic racing companion and show dog is an inspiring tale of adventure, teamwork, and dedication.
The Beginnings of a Running Companion
D.J. (Derek Junior) is a Swedish Foxhound, a breed known for its athleticism and determination. His owners, long-time Canicross enthusiasts, first discovered the breed through a magazine article and later met Angela from Flixtonia Hamiltonstovare at Crufts. D.J. joined their family a few years later, selected for his lighter build and distinctive markings—including a unique “King chess piece” pattern on his face.
Canicross, a sport that involves cross-country running with a dog attached via a non-restrictive harness and bungee line, proved to be a perfect fit for D.J. His training began at two years old, allowing his muscles and bones to fully develop before taking on the physical demands of racing. Since then, he has become a formidable running companion, competing at the grassroots level for fun and even representing Wales in the Canix Fur Nations Cup.
“D.J. is a super running friend and races at grassroots level for FUN.” “Canicross is a super sport for a dog who generally cannot be let off lead in the countryside due to a high prey drive.“ It provides excellent enrichment, allowing dogs to tap into their natural instincts to run, chase, and trail. “It can be interesting running with D.J. as if he smells a deer track, he tends to go off sideways at speed on his own mission!”
More Than Just a Runner
Beyond Canicross, D.J. has explored a range of activities that showcase his natural instincts. He has participated in scentwork and tracking, tapping into his breed’s innate hunting abilities. He has also taken part in dog shows, winning his class at Crufts 2022. The breed may be small in number, but D.J. has certainly made his mark!
His involvement in the canine world doesn’t stop at competition—D.J. also helps newcomers to Canicross at Dean Canicoach, where his owners provide guidance to beginners in return for donations to a local dog rescue. He is also a key ambassador for his breed at Crufts’ Discover Dogs stand, charming visitors with his enthusiasm and affectionate nature—especially his habit of reaching up to give a friendly lick on the ear!
“D.J. insists on being fed ham before he gets in the car.“ “We had a worrying time when D.J. swallowed a whole hand glove, and it took six days before we saw it again!”
“We do Canicross races with Canix UK as the races are fun, safe, and well-organized.“ These races provide a fantastic opportunity for dogs and their handlers to enjoy the sport in a welcoming environment.
A Special Photoshoot with Pets Make Portraits
Although I first met Barb and D.J. while photographing them at Canix events, this photoshoot was done under the umbrella of Pets Make Portraits. As part of his upcoming role at Discover Dogs 2025, Barb approached me for professional photographs of D.J. to feature on the stand. Having worked with them before, I knew how well D.J. performed in front of the camera, and I was excited to capture his personality in a dedicated session.
Understanding canine movement and temperament is key to getting the perfect shots. I made sure to let D.J. set the pace, capturing him at his most vibrant while recognizing when he needed a break. The results were breathtaking—a mix of dynamic Canicross shots and striking portraits highlighting his elegance and athleticism. These photographs will feature at Crufts 2025 and take pride in place in Barb’s home as cherished framed prints.
A Tribute to a Stunning Dog
D.J.’s story is a testament to the joy and enrichment that Canicross and dog sports bring to both dogs and their owners. From thrilling races to prestigious show rings and public meet-and-greets, D.J. has done it all with enthusiasm and heart.
I feel incredibly honoured to have contributed to capturing his journey, and I look forward to seeing him shine at Discover Dogs 2025. If you’re at Crufts, stop by and meet this incredible Hamiltonstovare—you might leave with an ear lick and a newfound appreciation for Canicross!
With thanks to Barb M. for sharing D.J.’s story and for trusting Pets Make Portraits to capture these treasured moments.
