Doug: The Long-Legged Rescue Who Changed Everything
A Canicross dog with a heart of gold and a love for speed

When Helena’s friends started sending her rescue dog posts, they had no idea they were about to introduce her to the four-legged whirlwind who would change her life. Doug—a striking mix of Pointer, Beagle, Husky, and Coonhound—was the dog she hadn’t known she was looking for.

“I’d lost four dogs over the course of eleven months,” Helena explains. “It was heartbreaking, but after two years, my heart told me it was time. Friends were on the lookout for a hound type, and one day someone sent me a photo of Doug. All I remember saying was: that’s the one I want. He was all ears and beautiful eyes.”

There was just one catch—Doug wasn’t in the UK. He was in Cyprus.

Helena had always believed in rescuing dogs locally, but Doug changed that in an instant. “He opened my heart to international rescue. I was hooked.” She and her husband met Doug and his sister at the airport. “He was all legs, ears, and such a gentle nature. I remember thinking: how could anyone dump these pups in the hills?”

Doug settled in quickly, and it wasn’t long before his athletic spirit began to shine. A particular memory stands out: racing with Helena’s husband at Pembrey.

“They took off like rockets. Doug had his game face on—pure focus—and my husband was heel-flicking his own butt just to keep up! At the finish, one of them was smiling, and the other… well, let’s just say he looked a bit exhausted!” she laughs.

Doug’s passion for Canicross has become legendary in their circle. He now gets lent out within their social group to runners looking for a bit of “Dougie power.” Fast, fun, and always up for blasting around a forest trail, he’s not just a great runner—he’s a team player.

And he doesn’t stop there. Doug also loves free running alongside the bike and has taken naturally to Bikejor. “We haven’t entered a competition yet,” Helena adds, “but watch this space.”

One of my favourite things about pet photography is capturing the joy in motion—like Doug blasting through the Wyre Forest earlier this year at a CaniX event.

Doug’s story is a testament to the deep bond between human and dog, and the unexpected paths that rescue animals can lead us down. From the hills of Cyprus to the muddy trails of Canicross, Doug’s journey is full of speed, love, and adventure.

Doug’s story is part of my ongoing dog photography portrait series, highlighting the spirit of dogs who run, play, and bond with their humans.
